Dilute Hydrofluoric Acid (HF) is a solution of hydrofluoric acid mixed with water, generally with a concentration of 10–50% HF by weight. Hydrofluoric acid itself is a highly corrosive and dangerous acid, and even in dilute form, it can pose significant health and safety risks. Here's a detailed overview:

Physical Properties:
  • Appearance: Colorless, fuming liquid in its pure form; dilute solutions are clear and colorless.
  • Odor: Sharp, pungent smell, similar to that of vinegar or rotten eggs.
  • Boiling point: 108°C (226.4°F) for pure HF, but it decreases with dilution.
  • Freezing point: Around −83.6°C (−118.5°F) for pure HF.
  • Density: 1.15 g/cm³ for pure HF (dilution decreases density).
  • Solubility: Highly soluble in water, forming hydrofluoric acid.
Chemical Properties:
  • Molecular formula of Hydrofluoric Acid: HF
  • Strong Acid: HF is a strong acid, meaning it dissociates completely in water, releasing hydrogen ions (H⁺) and fluoride ions (F⁻).
  • Corrosive: It is highly corrosive to most materials, including glass, metals, and many plastics, due to its ability to react with silica (SiO₂) to form silicon tetrafluoride (SiF₄).
  • Reactivity with Calcium: HF can react with calcium compounds to form calcium fluoride (CaF₂), which is a non-soluble salt.
Uses:
  1. Industrial Applications:
    • Glass etching and cleaning: Hydrofluoric acid is widely used in the glass industry to etch or frost glass surfaces, as it can dissolve silica.
    • Metal cleaning and pickling: It is used to clean and remove oxides from metals, especially stainless steel and aluminum.
    • Oil refining and petrochemical industry: HF is used in refining processes, such as the alkylation of petroleum.
  2. Production of Fluorine Compounds:
    • HF is a key ingredient in the production of other fluorine-containing chemicals, such as refrigerants, Teflon (PTFE), and uranium hexafluoride (UF₆).
  3. Electronics and Semiconductor Manufacturing: Used in cleaning and etching processes for semiconductor wafers.
Health and Safety Hazards:
  • Toxicity: Hydrofluoric acid is extremely toxic. Even dilute solutions can cause severe health effects if inhaled, ingested, or if they come in contact with skin. The fluoride ions can bind to calcium in the body, leading to hypocalcemia (low calcium levels), which can result in muscle spasms, irregular heartbeat, and even death.
  • Skin Contact: HF can cause severe burns that are not immediately painful, making it particularly dangerous. It penetrates the skin and can cause deep tissue damage, which may go unnoticed until symptoms become severe.
  • Inhalation: Inhaling HF fumes can irritate the respiratory system, causing coughing, shortness of breath, and even lung damage if exposure is prolonged.
  • Eye Exposure: HF can cause severe irritation, corneal damage, and even permanent blindness if it comes into contact with the eyes.
First Aid Measures:
  • Skin Contact: Immediately rinse the affected area with water for at least 15 minutes. If possible, apply calcium gluconate gel (a calcium compound) to neutralize the fluoride ions. Seek medical attention immediately.
  • Eye Contact: Rinse eyes with water for at least 15 minutes. Seek immediate medical attention.
  • Inhalation: Move the person to fresh air immediately. If symptoms persist, seek medical attention.
  • Ingestion: Do not induce vomiting. Rinse mouth and seek immediate medical help.
